Hypericum perforatum, also known as common Saint John’s wort or simply St John’s wort, is a flowering plant in the family Hypericaceae. Hypericum perforatum is native to parts of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, but has spread and is considered an invasive species in some parts of the world. Saint St John’s wort is a herbaceous perennial plant with extensive, creeping rhizomes. The ancients believed the plant has mystical qualities, and plants were collected for protection from demons and to drive away evil spirits. St. John’s wort has been used in alternative medicine as a likely effective aid in treating mild to moderate depression and related symptoms such as anxiety or insomnia. The primary phytochemical constituents of St John’s wort are hyperforin & hypericin, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tanins, volatile oils, vitamins, B-sitosterols etc. The use of St John wort, as an herbal remedy to treat a variety of internal and external ailments dates back to the time of the ancient Greeks. Since then, it has remained a popular treatment for anxiety, depression, cuts, and burns. Studies show that hyperforin inhibits the growth of certain types of microorganisms and helps to control bacterial & Viral load.
